Fishing opener is May 14 in 2022.
Several lakes hold Lake Trout so it really depends on the area your interested in exploring. You can find lake specific info regarding fish species present on MN Lakefinder. The area including South Arm Knife and neighboring small lakes is always a good bet for Lakers.

Explorer: "My buddy and I are planning an early May trip, 2022 and are looking for the best lakes to catch lake trout. I had good luck one year on mountain lake but was looking for anyone's opinion on better lakes for trout."
Looking for size or quantity?

If you are looking for cooler water for shallower fish, I would recommend a very deep cold lake like Kekekabic, Seagull, Saganaga, Knife. With the opener one week later, you might run into warmer water temps and they will be harder to find. Generally, larger lakes are better to target early season trout....just be careful, they are also more dangerous...
