I did a bear hunt on the fringe of the BWCA for a week back in '12 and stayed on the island campsite. Never did get a bear as I was only feeding a sow and cubs with my bait i had on west side of lake, but I did catch/eat alot of walleyes. Mostly jig/minnow and they were 13-16" with a couple larger ones along with a big northern caught from camp ~36-38". Rusty Crayfish abound and even on a long stringer they would overrun any walleyes I hoped to keep for breakfast.
Have gone through there many, many times on the way to the N Kawishiwi R and almost always see folks fishing on the south side of the big island or just west of the smaller island closer to the southern portage.
