I'm flying into Clay (July 6) and making the long paddle through N Kawa to camp on Kawnipi. I've seen some references to excellent fishing on the Wawiag. Could anyone weigh in on this? I'm not going to have a ton of fishing time but interested to have the option if worthwhile. Thanks!

I have fished it 3 times with no luck. When you were allowed to stay at the mouth I found it to be very good. It takes a fairly long day to get from Clay to a legal camp on Kawnipi. You may want to keep the fishing gear stowed for faster travel until off the Wawiag.

I’m thinking this is good advice. Kinda what I was hoping to hear, just needed convincing, since I’m going to have to spend my 1st day Quetico day in 20 years without fishing. Thanks Magic!

Similar to Magic Paddler, I fished the Wawiag in early June 2019 with minimal luck. Picked up a few 24” pike - nothing special or exciting by Q standards. Picked up a nicer pike and a few smallies I believe at the mouth. I’m of the same mindset - just paddle the river, fish the mouth if you have time, and get to a good camp with a bit more energy and daylight left. I really like the area where Kawa Bay meets the main body of Kawnipi. A few good campsites there, and plenty of structure for a good chance at good fishing.
