Hammertime: "jimi1918: "
Cherry Lake visitor"
Was that at the mid-lake campsite? If so I saw him about 10 years ago. Every time we landed the canoe he made an appearance
"
It was! I had just gone swimming and my buddy noticed it coming up to check things out. Glad I had my underwater housing for my phone so I could snap a quick photo

I did have a really nice Loon picture, she swam over to my canoe to let me know it is really inappropriate to use a Whopper Plopper painted like a Loon, then calmly swam away. I didn't get a picture of the grouse that ran up from behind and started hissing at me, so I am going with this picture of a Duck and one of her Babies, but after going through my book of Ducks & Geese of Minnesota Field Guide and hours on the internet, I have no Idea what this duck is! But here is the picture, taken June 15th on LISN!

chessie:
Goldeneye. Nice pic!"
Thank you, not as sharp as my loon pics, but there are two really good ones submited - I was thrown by the bill (guide book said yellow tip, but appears all black)

Eastern Newt on Gogebic Lake.
I contacted the DNR about it after seeing that their distribution map had not included a post 1960 authenticated sighting in the area. Not sure if they will update the map, but they were truly interested where exactly on the lake it was found, I actually found two of them.

Msheveron: "Photo at burnt lake. Invasion of the turtles! "
I took this with my I phone in a hurry thinking we wouldn’t see them again, well every night we had several visitors. June 16-20 we were there. As many as 7 turtles one night. Needless to say the snakes also cruised around so I hope they don’t find all of them!

Middle campsite on Canoe
This guy (or gal) landed about 20 feet above our heads while we were filleting trout on the back of a Champlain for dinner. He stayed there all evening and night, and then started in with a wildly loud cacophony of eagle calls/songs at about 0515 the next morning. He then flew down to the four strips of trout pin bone meat that we had left on a rock at the landing (yeah, I know the rules...) and ate them in a couple seconds, then flew off to go do other eagle stuff. The kids were amazed at just how comfortable s/he seemed while being so close to the 5 of us while we were doing BW stuff. I have never been so close to one for so long before.

The yellow tip in guidebooks does throw one off. Everything else fits, and I think if you look at the Cornell bird ID site, there is one photo of a hen with a dark bill.

The immatures also have dark bills.
