New to trout fishing and will be in the vegetable chain area this fall, mid September. Looking for any tips or techniques on locating and catching brook trout and splake in these small lakes?
Water temperature will dictate where you should be fishing in September. My guess is that the water temps will still be warm. But if temps have cooled, focus in 15ft or less. Last week (surface temp around 73) I fished for Rainbows, Brookies, and Splake. I ended up catching all through species. I mainly targeted 20 feet of water on the edge of deeper drop-offs. I used Flicker Minnows 7 and 9, and Flicker Jointed Shad 5.
PikeP, I don't have any trout fishing advice but I would love to hear more about your trip to the veggie chain. For years I have been tempted to go there but I have not found much information. Perhaps you will write a trip report but, if not, I would love to know where you put in, parked your vehicle, and anything you would care to share about campsites, portages, etc.
Egknuti's got it. If we have a real cold spell in the next few weeks, they might be shallow by mid sept, but typically I don't find them shallow until last weekend of sept or first weekend of october.
In that case, I like trolling small inline spinners until I find them and then drifting and casting that particular stretch of water. Any small lure typically works. I like red and gold colors for brookies and splake, and silver and blue for rainbows...at least that's where i start and if not successful, i'll switch from there.
