I’ve been fortunate to have some incredible fishing experiences in the BWCA, and Quetico over the last 50 years, but my trip last week to Batchewaung has to be the best Walleye fishing I have ever experienced. I found a mid lake reef that seemed to hold ever Walleye in the lake . I caught Walleye pretty much nonstop in this area. The size and quantity of the fish were amazing. They ranged from 20 inches, all the way up to 27 inches. The fish were mainly in 14 to 17 feet. I was drifting, or slow trolling the edge of the reef with a1/4 jig, tipped with 3 inch twister tails. Chartreuse, yellow, and white seemed to be the colors they wanted. A earlier trip there this season, was good also. The biggest Walleye that trip was 30 inches. I’ve learned over the years that you don’t have to portage very far to catch fish. I think some of the “entry point” lakes get completely ignored when it comes to fishing…

walllee: "Always looking at the depth finder… I was drifting the main basin jigging for Lakers in 100 feet of water when I found the reef…I did mark it with my hand held Garmin… I’ve got 100’s of spots marked in Quetico, and the BWCA…."
100s of spots? Forget Blackbird's treasure? You've got the true treasure.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

missmolly: "a lot of the spots were found before GPS was around. The old triangular method of lining up the big rock with the tip of the island, and the tall pine on the far shore… it used to take some effort to get back to a particular spot. Fortunately I was able to get back to most of the areas over the years to simply punch them into my GPS. It’s amazing how technology has helped us die hards.walllee: "Always looking at the depth finder… I was drifting the main basin jigging for Lakers in 100 feet of water when I found the reef…I did mark it with my hand held Garmin… I’ve got 100’s of spots marked in Quetico, and the BWCA…."

Indeed. I wish I were up to date with the tech, but I'm glad you are, Walllee.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.
