Sound of a Barn Owl
I heard an unearthly raspy screeching sound early this morning and identified it as a Barn Owl. At first I thought it was a dying rabbit but the sound was moving amongst the trees. I used NatureInstruct-Dendrocia to identify the sound.
I am in North St. Louis County, MN. It looks like the owl was north of it's range.

Hey Zulu, you should share that report with the local naturalists, do a search for Ely Field Naturalists. A Barn Owl would be a real find. I've never seen or heard one, and from everything I have read, their range is shrinking and they are becoming much rarer. So this is worth noting.

A cousin and I found a dead Barn Owl on the banks of Heath Creek (Northfield MN) in the early 1970’s. It had been shot with an arrow. : (
