I have 8 5-gallon buckets with lids to give away at Canoecopia. These are food grade and formerally held frosting. The lids are simple snap-on. I outfit these buckets with a gamma seal to use as a food barrel. One is great for an extended solo trip or ~ 5-day two person trip.
Email me if interested. I'm staying at the Clarion and we'll probably arrange pick up after show times in the Clarion lobby.

In a pack.
I have a canvas pack I think I got from Sportsmans Guide, probably military. The 5 gallon bucket with gamma seal lid fits perfectly. My saw fits in it as well, along with rain suit on top and has side and front pockets for a few additional small items. It serves as my food pack/second pack for soloing.

Thanks.
I have a bucket with the gamma seal lid. My husband, though, was trying to talk me into getting a container he saw at the pet store for pet food with a gamma seal lid. But I think the plastic is too thin and brittle. If I'm not going to have a real bear-resistant container, I at least want one that isn't going to crack if I drop it on a rock!

I've been using a Vittle Vault and stashing in the woods the last few years. Really like it as it's sturdy and holds all our food. There are a lot of threads on here about it and I think it was GeoFisher that had a video on his website that showed how he filled it and carried it. We've never had any problem with bears or critters . I just turn it on it's side and put in a #3 Duluth pack, with lots of spare room left in the pack.

I do use a Garcia Bear Vault that I put in a smaller backpack (think school bookbag size) for shorter trips. But when it's too small to hold the amount of food for longer trips, I don't hesitate to take the 5 gallon bucket. Never had any issues with it, bear or otherwise.
