Hmm, I thought the Northwind 16 did not have a thwart behind the bow seat. I was specifically looking for one because of that as I would like to have a canoe I can easily paddle solo. Was that thwart added or am I just wrong about that?

I just purchased one off this site built in 2020, and it does not have the thwart behind the bow seat. Also looked at one @ Canoecopia, and it did not either. Possibly when it was built?
To that end, when was this canoe built?

I bought this in 2016, I believe Northstar stopped adding the thwart behind the bow shortly after that date. I believe the reason was to be able to paddle solo from the bow with canoe turned around. I do have an extra seat in which to replace the stern thwart to make this an able solo canoe also. The front of the seat goes where the stern thwart is. Added two holes for rear of seat.
