Looking for any input anyone may have. I’m planning two trips for this year. First one in early to mid June. Along with myself my older brother (75) a bwca veteran of about 8 trips, his 10 year old grandson, who has 1 trip under his belt and at least 1 other adult possibly 3. We are planning to put in at ep14 going thru the devils cascade portage, thru loon and LLC , back down thru North
, slim and little and east loon and back out the way we came in. My brother wants to be sure his grandson is engaged. He likes fishing very much, but has anyone done any hiking on the souix hustler trail. I see that is near our route in many places. Are there any pictos or other points of interest along the way that we should make a point to see? Does anyone know what the marine railroad is. It looks to be by the Beatty portage. We are planning 5-6 days.
My other trip is a 6-7 day solo. Thinking of putting in at Murdock and going up thru fourtown to boot, faity, gun, possibly into gull. Then back through the stream that enters the north end of fourtown and back out the way I came. Although I’m a veteran of about 4 trips with one 10 day solo I’ve never been there in September. Anything I should be concerned about or look forward to. Also I’m not committed to this route and would be interested in any suggestions someone may have. Thanks in advance for any input.

I'd suggest as things get closer, split these into 2 different posts once you know where you're going and how many.

As for your first trip, I did that exact route a handful of years back. Nice area and good fishing in spots. Yes the Beatty Portage is a rail portage where motor boats can cross land. They pay for that service, you can just land on shore like any other portage and carry your stuff across the mowed grass and put in and keep on going. Kind of a cool thing to see even though it is "civilization" on the edge of the park.

Putting in at Mudro and going on that route in Sept would be nice. It's a busy EP but you should be on the tail end of that as long as it's not the holiday week early Sept. That's the Moosecamp river that flows south into Fourtown, it's a scenic very small stream and nice paddle in normal to high water. If the water levels are low prior to your trip I'd skip that portion of the route.

The LIS has many opportunities for loops. My first suggestion would be to go west and stay in the smaller lakes. Some of the portages are a little longer, but you won't see many people, and fishing is some of the best in the area.
day 1: EP 14- Shell
Day 2: Explore Little Shell, lynx, maybe make a day trip to see the freshwater jellyfish in Ruby or try out the pike fishing on agawato (if the beavers dammed it up again). Stay on Lynx the second night. It's one of my favorite lakes and was a killer for bass and walleye.
day 3: Make your way up to East Loon Bay via Heritage Lake. The campsite at the top of the cliffs is amazing, and the fishing from shore is pretty good, too
Day 4: east loon- devils cascade (there's a campsite at the top above the falls)
Day 5: Devils cascade- upper pauness
Day 6: upper pauness- ep 14

If you're traveling with 4 or more people, this is a great route. If it's just 2 or 3 of you, you will be able to cover more ground so you can combine 2 travel days or add in an extra day trip up to pageant lake. I personally think everyone should see LLC at least once in their life as its a beautiful lake. However, I really like to highlight the seclusion aspect of these trips, and hearing motorized watercraft can be off-putting if that's the vibe you're going for.
