But wowza!! The price curls my hair!
"
True. But as long as you don't leave it in a fire ring you only need to buy it once.

I like leaving behind $15 dollar gear...

Finnboy: "Campcraft: "I have a Voyageur Streamside that I would sell for $100. Used one time.
Mike"
Thanks. I think I found one."
You won’t regret it…I got mine in 2005. Maverick on here talked me into it, we bought ours together to save money on a discount or shipping…anyway I had Bobbernumber3’s opinion until I got mine.
What’s weird is I swear I lost my sunglasses every year. I always used cheap junk because of that…then 10 years ago switched to Maui Jim prescription…somehow I’ve never misplaced or lost them…my theory is we misplace/lose junk that doesn’t work well. Quality items that you deem essential beucase of that quality…NOPE…not gonna be left behind.

Your sunglasses theory is spot on!
What are the quality features that has you sold on the Purcell Grill? I can easily be swayed to upgrade cooking gear.

Well now I am nervous to suggest it and cause someone to spend money that wasn’t looking to spend money :)
I like quality products that stand the test of time you can count on. The fact is is hand made in America is a plus too. The grills are stainless steel, I question the chemical safety of some of the grill grates when exposed to fire/grilling food—-especially when made elsewhere…how do you know what chemicals/actual metals are in these cheaper grills. These grill grates are sturdier and lighter as well. I am also an ounce counter.
Some of my reasoning might be a little paranoia and and emphasis of weight reduction. Not for everyone. I am really hard on stuff and have had items fail in the middle of no where so just try to get better stuff when I can.
My previous grate started to rust after a year or two and my friend talked me into the purchase as a replacement…I probably wouldn’t have bought it on my own, but I have never regretted it and my friend has reminded me several times of my apprehension:) ultimately it’s a luxury item not a necessity…

I would also add the Purcell really packs well due to its shape. I have no regrets with this purchase and highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Quetico.

I got the Purcell Trench Streamside Packer grill years ago. It's the one with mesh over the frame. It has been over some hot fires before and still it is as flat as the day I got it. For stream or river trout fishing, it is just the right size to slip into my backpack but still big enough to accommodate a full rainbow. I've grilled fish, burgers, veggies, what have you on that in places where there are no fire grates but there are at least two stones.
Craftsmanship is solid. Working with stainless steel can be a pain, but the welds on this are good, and all the sharp edges have been sanded down. Even if I didn't have this grill in its own carrying bag, there isn't any sharp edges that will snag and rip your pack.
It is expensive. But as long as I don't leave it behind at a campsite, I'll never have to buy one again. After I am all done canoeing and backpacking and such, this grill will probably see somewhere between 30 to 40 (maybe 50?) years of campsites.

Until today I had never heard of a Purcell grill. Interesting.
Yup, super expensive for what it is but I imagine the guy making it probably has a half hour or an hour in the construction if really banging them out, plus the materials and you get a fabric carrying bag. In the end, a fair deal.
Not a toy for people on a tight budget. But a good upgrade for the serious outdoors person like me!

Different strokes for different folks. I have no regrets spending the money I did on the Purcell for all the reasons stated above. I also have no worries about leaving it at a site as I always do a once over before moving on.

It is simple, solid, robust and made with care. Inside its sleeve it functions as a protector for my tent poles when my gear is packed. I hesitated at the cost but it has served me well for years and years.

Canoe42: "I use this. Works great. Walmart $5.
Packs down to about the size of a CD case. Removed Sterno can holder and I use twigs as fuel."
4 things…it’s heavier than my larger Purcell grate, I don’t trust cooking on that metal at high heat and what chemicals are being put into my food…it’s too small to grill my trout and ribeyes on. I don’t trust it, I need something that will work in the middle of nowhere and not break. If it works for you though my option definitely isn’t worth the money and I get that too.
